Terry Christian feels he comes by his love of scrimshaw naturally. He says, "My ancestry is filled with colorful seafarers, the most famous being Fletcher Christian of "Mutiny on the Bounty."
I etch on either 10,000 year old Mammoth Ivory, 100+ year old Walrus Ivory, and a material called "Eco Ivory," which is an entirely man-made material mimicing the properties of ivory. The base material I select is chosen for its natural beauty, color and size.
Colors found in natural ivory are a result of minerals in the surrounding earth, giving each piece its individual and distinct characteristics. When I am is satisfied that the subject matter of my artwork will blend with the natural beauty of the ivory, I begin my work."
